Our Training Approach
Understanding systemic therapy and how we prepare emerging therapists to see the whole picture.
Understanding You in Context
At Austin Family Institute, we believe that people are shaped by the relationships and systems around them. Systemic therapy looks beyond the individual to consider the connections, patterns, and environments that influence how we experience our lives.
That might include your family, partner, friendships, work, culture, community, or other relationships that are important to you.
Instead of asking only, "What's wrong?" we may also explore questions like:
What is happening in your relationships?
What patterns keep showing up?
How have the people and systems around you shaped your experience?
What would you like to change or understand differently?
Our goal is to help you better understand yourself and your relationships so you can create meaningful change in the places that matter most.
How We Train Therapists
As a systemic training institute, AFI prepares Graduate Associates and Post-Graduate Associates to look at the whole picture, not just the individual.
Our associates receive ongoing supervision, education, and support as they work with individuals, couples, and families. They learn to consider the systems that shape each person's experience and to approach therapy with curiosity, collaboration, and respect.
This means your care is grounded in a perspective that recognizes you as more than a diagnosis or a problem to be solved. We work with you to understand what matters in your life, the relationships that shape you, and the changes you hope to make.
At AFI, we believe meaningful change happens in context, and no one exists in isolation.
