Undergraduate Internship

To apply for a placement in our Undergraduate Internship program, please email your cover letter and resume to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. In addition, AFI requires three recommendation letters: one from a professor, one from a professor OR a professional with whom you have worked or interned, and a non-family member character reference. Recommenders can send letters via email to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. or fax at 512-329-6146. We will review those materials and inform you promptly whether we would like to invite you for an interview.

What to expect from an internship at AFI

We are a non-profit counseling/therapy and training institute providing the opportunity for junior and senior students to receive direct exposure to a clinical and private practice therapy setting. Along with extensive clerical experience in a private practice setting, undergraduates are able to participate in weekly group supervision, observe individual supervision with our therapist interns, and view videos of sessions. It is a unique and rare opportunity for those interested in about entering the mental health field.

RequireD Qualifications

  • Must be a junior or senior majoring in psychology, human development, social work, health sciences, or related fields

  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Candidates must be available to commit 14-16 hours weekly for the duration of the semester. Mondays 10am- 12pm are required hours.

  • Candidates must receive course credit for participation in the internship through their undergraduate program

Preferred Qualifications

  • Detail oriented and comfortable working in an office environment

  • Interest in mental health, health sciences, and/or non-profit work

  • Ability to prioritize and demonstrate good time management

  • Strong organization skills

Graduate Internship

HOW TO APPLY

Austin Family Institute accepts applications for two and three semester practicum/internship placements for Spring, Summer and Fall semesters. Austin Family Institute will also occasionally accept students with non-traditional start dates if space in our Internship program permits. To apply for a placement in our Graduate Internship program, please email your cover letter and resume to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. In addition, AFI requires three recommendation letters, one from a professor, one from a professional with whom have worked or interned, and a non-family member character reference. Recommenders can send letters via email to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org. We will review completed applicant materials and schedule interviews, generally within 3 weeks of the application deadlines.

What makes AFI different?

At AFI, you get more than just a simple hour of supervision and training. Our Graduate Associates receive at least two hours of hands on supervision per week, one hour in a group and one hour in an individual setting. Our Associates supervisors are also available for additional consultation or support in the event of crisis. In addition to those two hours, you will receive one hour of family therapy education per week in our marriage and family therapy seminar in which we discuss relevant clinical issues from a systemic perspective. Finally, on the weeks we do not have an hour of MFT seminar, you will engage in a peer consultation learning group with your other associates. With two locations in Austin, you will have access to diverse populations and clinical challenges. Finally, our commitment is to help train students to become effective, systemic clinicians. By the time you leave AFI, you will be empowered to be placed in almost any professional position you seek, from agency work to private practice.

Minimum Qualifications for Graduate Associate placement

  • LMFT or dual-track degree program strongly preferred

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to systems theory

  • Speak clearly about MFT models (ex. Structural, Strategic, Bowen, Narrative)

  • Maintain vigilant ethical and professional boundaries

  • Collaborate effectively and creatively in a group setting

  • Must be teachable and have a desire for knowledge

  • Strong communication skills and willingness to ask questions

  • Commit at least two semesters to AFI, three semesters preferred

  • Available to participate in mandatory weekly programming Mondays from 10am-12pm

  • Commit at least one evening or Saturday per week for client appointments as part of required 15-18 hour weekly commitment

Post-Graduate Internship

How to Apply

We are actively seeking applications for Post-Graduate Associate therapists. If you are not a current AFI Graduate Associate and wish to apply, please submit the following to apply@austinfamilyinstitute.org: cover letter, resume/CV, and three references (include reference name, relationship to applicant / length of relationship, phone, and email).

If you are a current AFI Graduate Associate, please notify the Head of Administration in writing a minimum of 60 days prior to the last day of graduate internship. The Head of Administration will set up an interview with AFI directors and faculty within three weeks of the request to discuss.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR Post-GRADUATE ASSOCIATE PLACEMENT

  • Must have graduated from a marriage and family therapy graduate program or equivalent

  • Must be licensed as an LMFT Associate and/or LPC Associate, or be in the process of applying for licensure after passing the applicable exam(s)

  • Willing and able to see 15-18 clients per week, including one evening or Saturday 3-hour block

  • Available to participate in mandatory weekly programming Mondays from 10am-12pm

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to systems theory and speak clearly about MFT models

  • Maintain vigilant ethical and professional boundaries

  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and collaborate effectively and creatively in a group setting

  • Must be teachable and committed to continued professional growth and development

  • Must be a self-starter and be able to demonstrate initiative

  • Must be able to demonstrate initiative

This part time position is paid based on a percentage of client fees received. This is a hybrid in-office and remote position with a requirement that a minimum of 50% of time scheduled is in office.
