The Austin Family Institute (AFI) offers training and supervision to interns and residents who are accruing hours for licensure as mandated by the examining boards of the State of Texas. Training and supervision is from a systems theory orientation. The interns and residents provide counseling to the Austin area community on a sliding fee scale. Each intern and resident receives at least two hours of clinical supervision by Board Approved Supervisors for the State of Texas.
Beginning in January 2003, AFI added a new program for Junior-Senior students in psychology or counseling. To fulfill the practicum requirements for majors in the field, AFI offers the opportunity to observe clinical group supervision, experience the administration of a private practice and participate in didactic education. Students from Austin area colleges interested in securing a practicum position may submit an application, complete with references.
The Austin Family Institute has two supervised internship training positions for undergraduate level university students. This is a six to ten hour per week internship, actively participating in an outpatient mental health practice. The senior level students will be exposed to marriage and family therapy training. They will answer telephone lines, attend clinical group supervision, and actively learn about mental health issues and the continuum of community resources available for treating children, adolescents, and families. This is an excellent, hands-on education and exposure to clinical to the clinical practice of marriage and family therapy.
