Afshan Khan, MD
Dr. Afshan Khan is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) in Psychiatry with a second ABPN certification in the subspecialty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Prior to moving to the United States in 2006, Dr. Khan received her MBBS from Deccan Medical College, India and continued her Psychiatry training as a Resident Physician at Maudsley NHS London, England. She then started with an internship at Maine Medical Center, Portland, Maine and completed residency training in psychiatry from UTSW, Dallas. She went on to sub specialize in child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UTSW, Austin and was also a chief resident in her final year. She currently works as a Service Director for the Child and Adolescent inpatient unit at Austin Oaks Hospital.
Dr. Khan and her family have lived in Austin for a few years now. She and her husband are raising their two beautiful children and enjoy an active lifestyle.
Dr. Khan has expertise in diagnosing and treating depression, mood problems, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and behavioral issues associated with cognitive and developmental delays and other psychiatric illnesses. In addition to skills prescribing psychiatric medication, Dr. Khan is well versed in psychotherapy techniques and incorporates them into her interactions with her patients. She successfully trained in cognitive behavioral therapy and individual psychodynamic therapy at UTSW. She also completed courses at UTSW family studies center in Family Therapy furthermore she bagan and lead group therapy session during her training at UTSW.
She firmly believes that all individuals and families have their own unique strengths and focuses on identifying and capitalizing on them during treatment. She has a holistic approach to patient's problems and when appropriate she is able to collaborate effectively with other professionals. She works towards a meaningful therapeutic relationship for a patient centered treatment plan.
